update: march
14 March, 2010
wow. it’s been a while since i’ve updated this thing. life has been busy & taken over.
my album is still out, and you can still check it out here and here. if you feel moved to pick it up, please do so, full spectrum would greatly appreciate it.
the album is in rotation at a few radio stations. if you’d want to call and request it, that would be cool. or if you want to just listen and wait for it to come on, that’s cool too, but i don’t recommend that method. it’s at the following radio stations:
WUAG – Greensboro, NC
WQFS – Greensboro, NC
WXYC – Chapel Hill, NC
KTRU – Houston, TX
WNYU – New York, NY
stillstream.com – Online
WBMR – Boston, MA
I’ve been working on a piece that I think is pretty interesting – a drone piece for flexible instrumentation. It’s going to be performed March 22nd in Greensboro, and April 30th in Austin, TX as part of the FuseBox Festival. I’m really looking forward to these performances. The groups will be incredibly different and diverse, and I think we’ll get two great, but totally different pieces. Other than these two performances, I’m not doing too much in the way of performing. Recent shows around town have been solo banjo shows. I’ve worked up some covers and a few original banjo songs, just to do something totally different. I felt the need to take some time off from performing my music, in order to focus on the direction I want to go to next.
I haven’t been totally taking a break, though. I’m working on a release for Future Recordings. This is close to done, and I’m excited about this one. It’s two pieces, and will be released on cassette. I also recorded a collaborative album with Brian John Mitchell this past week. We’ll see what happens with that. Also being released soon is a 4-way split on Eric Hall’s Echolocation Records. It’s a great line-up: ll (Eric Hall & Matt Dill), Michael Vallera, & Noose of Laurels. This one should see the light of day in a next few months.

you can buy physical copies of the album from our brand new full spectrum website here
you will be able to buy a cheaper digital version at this bandcamp site we’ve set up here

so after a brief rest on new year’s day, we’re back on the road again. the first show of the new year was last night at Gypsy Coffee in Tulsa. I have to say that Tulsa is a much better place than Oklahoma City. There are actually people there, believe it or not. Coffee shops are always a bit peculiar for me to play. One might think it would work well, since my music is essentially ambient music, but it really doesn’t. There is too much extraneous sound for my music to really work; people on dates, espresso machines, porcelain clinking, etc. The moments within the music are lost because the details aren’t there among the noise. But I always learn more about the piece when I’m performing in a space that’s not quite optimal. i also got paid with a coffee mug, rather than money. i’m into that.
we drove in snow on the way to wichita. i like driving through the snow. it removes the human element of the world a little bit. i feel that after this, it’ll only get colder. lincoln, nebraska tomorrow. but we press on, wearing many layers of clothing. the cold isn’t like this in the south.

you can check out my set from Radio Greensboro a couple of weeks ago here: http://radiogreensboro.tumblr.com/post/286520582/andrew-weathers-12-06-09
rad. the shows so far have been going well. Full of friendly people, and good times. playing in a converted warehouse last night in Huntsville, AL. I think more buildings need to be revived like that. It makes for such a beautiful environment. Today we drove to Oxford, MS, passing the NASA space museum and a tree full of shoes. I’m looking forward to playing tonight. This is a nice town. The home of William Faulkner.

preparation
7 December, 2009
i have been reading Martin Duberman’s Black Mountain to unwind after a weekend packed with good tunes. there was a great time had at the porcelain rose, dancing and improvised sing-and-stomp-along included. i performed the new piece that i’ll be playing on this tour twice this weekend. first at legitimate business, and also on Reed Benjamin’s Radio Greensboro.
now that the semester is closing out, and the weather is getting cold, it’s time for me to get ready for this tour. i will not forget heavy socks and several pairs of long underwear. my face is all clogged up, as it has been for the past few days, but i see that being healed by orange juice and vanilla chai tea. or healed by delicious. whichever you want. anyone that listened to the interview on WUAG tonight would tell you how ridiculous my stopped nose makes me sound. anyway, having played this piece twice, there are definitely a few kinks that need to be worked out, but it’s pretty much ready to go. i’m excited about this one.
listening to willits + sakamoto’s ocean fire. during my trip to miami, i saw a sound intallation that sakamoto did at the art museum on FIU’s campus. it consisted of speakers playing into some kind of thin, horizontal membrane covered in sand. it was intended to mimic the elaborate mandalas made by buddhist monks. i saw it as a modern take, and therefore an acceleration, on the deliberate process of making a mandala. i remember watching monks make a mandala at the NC art museum as a child.
i’m still booking a couple of dates for this one. please get in touch if you think you could possibly help, or have any ideas about someone who might be able to.
Jan 1 – North TX
Jan 3 – Southern Kansas
Jan 5-6 – Kansas City, MO (Maybe)
Jan 11 – Ohio
